Dental implants have become widely recognised as a superior option for replacing missing or severely damaged teeth. Over the past four decades, this technique has undergone significant advancements and refinements, resulting in improved outcomes for patients.
In 1965, Professor Per-Invar Branemark made a groundbreaking discovery when he invented the modern titanium implant. His first patient, Gosta Larsson, had been suffering from severe chin and jaw deformities, resulting in the loss of several teeth. Through extensive experimentation, Professor Branemark determined that titanium dental implants effectively integrated with bone, a process he aptly named “osseointegration” (derived from “osseo” meaning ‘bone’ and “integration” meaning ‘joining with’).
Interestingly, the use of dental implants dates back even further, to the Mayan civilisation. Excavators in Honduras made a fascinating discovery in 1931 when they found tooth-shaped pieces of shell serving as substitutes for three missing incisor teeth in a young woman’s mandible. This astonishing find predates Professor Branemark’s pioneering work by approximately 1,350 years!
The rich history and ongoing advancements in dental implantology have brought us to where we are today. Our practice remains dedicated to providing our patients with the highest level of care, incorporating the latest techniques and technologies. Join us at our clinic and experience the transformative power of dental implants.
In 1978, Professor Branemark achieved remarkable success with his dental implant concept. Recognising the potential for further development, he convinced the chemical and defence company Bofors to collaborate with him. This partnership led to the establishment of the Bofors Nobelpharma in 1981, marking a significant milestone in the realisation of the commercial potential of titanium implants. The company underwent a transformation and was eventually renamed Nobel Biocare in 1996.
The collaboration between Professor Branemark and Bofors paved the way for groundbreaking advancements in dental implant technology. Today, Nobel Biocare continues to be at the forefront of innovation, providing cutting-edge solutions that have transformed the lives of countless patients worldwide.
With a legacy spanning decades, Nobel Biocare remains dedicated to advancing dental implant research, development, and clinical success. Their commitment to excellence has solidified their position as a leading provider of state-of-the-art dental implant solutions.

The pioneering dental implant design has advanced considerably since then. It can be used to replace either a single tooth or multiple missing teeth, and is no longer the basic ‘one-size-fits-all’ system it once was.
Instead, modern dental implants are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit the individual. The surface material is also enhanced to improve the osseointegration process, which explains why dental implants today have a more-than 90 per cent success rate (depending on the implant’s jaw location), according to the Australian Dental Association.
